Post-Operative Care for Veneers
Thank you for choosing Renwick Dental for your veneer procedure. Veneers are a fantastic way to enhance your smile by improving the shape, colour, and overall appearance of your teeth. To ensure your veneers heal properly and last as long as possible, please follow the care instructions below during the days and weeks following your appointment.
What to Expect After Your Veneer Appointment
Mild Sensitivity or Discomfort
It is normal to experience some mild sensitivity in the veneered teeth, particularly to hot or cold foods and drinks. This is common in the first few days and should gradually fade as your teeth adjust.
If you received temporary veneers, you may notice that they feel slightly rough in texture—this is completely normal. Your final porcelain veneers will be much smoother and more natural in feel.
If you experience sharp pain, throbbing, or sensitivity that doesn’t improve, please contact our office.
Gum Tenderness
The gums surrounding the newly placed veneers may feel a bit sore or swollen. This should resolve within a few days as your mouth adapts.
You may also notice temporary changes in how your bite feels. This is normal, but if it doesn’t feel right after a few days, let us know.
If a temporary veneer comes off, don’t worry—these are not designed to stay on long-term. Simply contact us and we’ll arrange a quick appointment to reattach or remake the temporary until your final veneers are ready.
Post-Veneer Care Instructions
Oral Hygiene
- Brush regularly: Continue brushing twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Pay close attention to the gumline without scrubbing aggressively.
- Floss gently: Be sure to floss daily, taking care not to pull too hard around the edges of the veneers. Use a gentle technique to avoid damaging the margin.
Avoid Certain Foods
- Avoid hard, crunchy, or sticky foods (e.g., ice, nuts, popcorn, hard lollies, or chewing gum), especially in the first few days.
- Limit staining substances like coffee, red wine, and tobacco, as these can discolour the bonding material around your veneers.
Bite and Clenching Habits
- If you grind or clench your teeth, we may recommend a nightguard to protect your veneers while you sleep.
- Avoid using your teeth as tools (e.g., opening packaging) to prevent chipping or cracking your veneers.
What to Expect Moving Forward
Healing
Most patients adapt to their new veneers within a few days. Any initial sensitivity should subside, and your veneers will begin to feel like a natural part of your smile.
Follow-Up Check
We may ask you to return for a follow-up visit to check your bite and ensure everything is settling well. Please let us know if anything feels uneven or uncomfortable.
Long-Term Care
With proper care, veneers can last many years. Regular dental check-ups, excellent oral hygiene, and avoiding habits that stress your teeth will help maintain their beauty and longevity.
