Post-Operative Care for Dental Fillings
Thank you for choosing Renwick Dental for your filling procedure. We want to ensure that your recovery is smooth and comfortable. While getting a filling is a simple and straightforward process, there are some things to keep in mind during the days following your appointment to ensure optimal healing and care.
What to Expect After Your Filling Appointment
Sensitivity or Discomfort
- It is normal to experience some mild sensitivity or discomfort around the filled tooth, especially to hot, cold, or sweet foods. This sensitivity should subside within a few days as your tooth settles.
- If you experience more significant pain or discomfort that doesn’t go away, please contact our office.
Tooth Sensitivity
- You may feel some heightened sensitivity in the treated area, particularly when chewing or brushing. This will usually fade after a few days.
- If you notice that your filling feels high or uneven when you bite down, please let us know so we can adjust it.
Swelling or Tenderness
- Some swelling in the gums around the treated area is common, especially if the filling was deep or close to the gumline. This should resolve within a few days.
- You can apply a cold compress to your face for 15–20 minutes if swelling occurs.
Post-Filling Care Instructions
Oral Hygiene
- Brush gently: Continue brushing your teeth twice a day, but be gentle around the filled tooth. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to avoid any irritation.
- Floss carefully: When flossing, be gentle around the filling, especially if it’s a new or recent filling, to avoid disturbing the area.
Avoid Hard or Sticky Foods
- For the first 24 hours after your filling, try to avoid eating hard, sticky, or chewy foods, such as gum, caramels, or nuts, which could cause the filling to shift or get damaged.
- Be cautious with hot or cold foods and drinks as your tooth may be temporarily sensitive.
Pain Relief
- If you experience discomfort, you can take over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen as directed on the packaging.
- Applying a cold compress to your face may also help reduce swelling or pain.
What to Expect Moving Forward
Healing
- The tooth may feel slightly sensitive to pressure or temperature for the first few days. However, this should gradually go away as the area heals.
- If the sensitivity persists or worsens, please contact our office for further evaluation.
Check for Changes
- Keep an eye on the filled tooth and make sure that your bite feels normal. If you notice that the filling feels too high or if you have difficulty chewing on that side, contact us so we can make adjustments.
Long-Term Care
- With proper care, your filling can last many years. Regular brushing, flossing, and routine dental check-ups will help ensure the filling remains intact and your tooth stays healthy.
