Post-Operative Care for Dental Bonding

Thank you for choosing Renwick Dental for your bonding treatment. Dental bonding is a simple and effective way to repair chips, close gaps, or enhance the shape and colour of your teeth. While the procedure is minimally invasive, there are a few important aftercare tips to ensure your bonding stays beautiful and lasts for years to come.

What to Expect After Your Bonding Appointment

Mild Sensitivity or Discomfort
You may experience slight sensitivity to hot or cold foods for a few days after your bonding procedure. This is normal and should settle on its own.

If your bite feels uneven or the bonded area feels sharp, please contact us—we may need to make a small adjustment to ensure your comfort.

Gum Tenderness
If the bonding was placed near your gumline, you might notice some mild irritation or tenderness in that area. This should resolve within a few days. Continue with your usual oral hygiene routine, being gentle around the treated tooth.

Caring for Your Bonded Teeth

Oral Hygiene

  • Continue brushing and flossing as normal—gentle, thorough oral care will help maintain both your natural teeth and the bonded areas.
  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste to avoid premature wear.
  • Floss carefully around bonded areas, especially if bonding was done between teeth.

Avoid Staining Foods and Drinks

  • The resin material used in bonding can stain over time. To help keep your smile bright, try to limit exposure to coffee, tea, red wine, berries, and tobacco products—especially within the first 48 hours.
  • Rinse your mouth or brush your teeth after consuming staining substances.

Watch Out for Chipping or Wear
Bonding is durable, but not as strong as natural enamel or porcelain. To keep your bonded teeth intact:

  • Avoid biting your nails, chewing ice, or opening packaging with your teeth.
  • Be cautious with hard or crunchy foods (nuts, hard lollies, etc.), especially in the first 24–48 hours.
  • If you grind or clench your teeth, a night guard may be recommended to protect the bonding.

What to Expect Moving Forward

Longevity
With good care, dental bonding can last several years. However, it may eventually require touch-ups or replacement due to staining or wear.

Monitoring Changes
If you notice changes in colour, texture, or shape—or if the bonding feels rough or begins to lift—please contact us. Minor repairs can usually be made quickly and comfortably.

Routine Visits
Be sure to keep up with your regular dental check-ups and cleans. We’ll check the condition of your bonding at each visit and make sure everything is functioning as it should.
